The moneyline history might indicate that it is a good night to fade the Toronto Maple Leafs, while the counter-argument is that they might have too much offense even for one of the NHL’s tightest-checking teams. Riding a nine-game point streak, the Maple Leafs are the -165 home favorite while the New York Islanders are the +145 away underdog with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Saturday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Maple Leafs are 5-8 in their last 13 games as a -150 to -180 home favorite at online betting sites and the Islanders are 12-8 in their last 20 games as a +130 to +160 away underdog. Also, Toronto is 2-7 in its last nine home games against the Metropolitan Division, whereas New York is 7-1 in its last eight away games against the Atlantic Division. The total went UNDER in five of those games with the other three finishing in a push. The total has finished OVER in 10 of the Islanders’ last 12 visits to Scotiabank Arena.

Islanders at Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Islanders are 25-11-3 overall, including a 6-4 record is an away underdog this season. Led up front by Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson, the Islanders are not overly imposing offensively as they rank 30th in the NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (46.1 percent), but their strong defense means they seldom have to outscore teams. The Islanders are 21st in goals scored (2.87 per game) and fourth in goals against (2.59). Their power play is ranked 17th (19.6 percent) and the penalty kill is ranked 12th (81.2).
Semyon Varlamov, who is 14-4-3 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .921 save percentage, has made three consecutive starts for the Islanders. He has a 2.23 GAA and .926 save percentage this season when playing on one day’s rest.
The Maple Leafs are 23-14-5, and have scored an average of 4.44 goals while going 8-1 across their last nine games. Centers Auston Matthews and John Tavares, along with wingers William Nylander and Mitchell Marner, are leading an attack that is capitalizing on being fifth in the NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (52.8 percent). The hot streak has helped Toronto climb to second in the NHL in goals scored (3.60 per game) while they rank 21st in goals against (3.17). The Leafs’ power play is ranked fifth (24.4 percent) and the penalty kill is ranked 26th (75.4).
Goalie Frederik Andersen is 21-8-4 with a 2.67 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, but had a 48-shot workload during a 6-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. Andersen has a 2.26 GAA and .933 save percentage when he is playing with one day of rest.
The Maple Leafs host the Edmonton Oilers on Monday and the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday as part of their three-game homestand.
