Leafs’ Chance Takers, 2010-11 Regular Season

Pictured above are two of the Leafs’ leading scoring chance takers from the 2010-11 season, Phil Kessel (most taken on the team) and Nikolai Kulemin (3rd most). Kulemin had the best shooting percentage on scoring chances out of all Leaf players with at least 50 chances.

TSC: Total Scoring Chances
TGC: Total Goals (scoring chances converted into goals). Goals that weren’t counted as a scoring chance (those scored on fluke plays) are not included.

ChS %: Shooting percentage on scoring chances. ChS % = Goals / Scoring Chances
Then the scoring chance breakdowns at 5-on-5 (5v5) and 5-on-4 (5v4), which together account for 92.4 % of all Leafs’ chances. Due to space limitations, 4-on-4, 4-on-3, and 2-man advantage situations aren’t included here.
I recorded a scoring chance whenever a shot (that isn’t blocked) was taken from within the designated scoring area (see diagram at bottom of this post), or from outside through a screen or traffic in front of the goal.

Some more data to supplement the above table:
– There were two games that I didn’t track this data for, but the leading breakaway shooters on the team were Kessel and Grabovski with 5 apiece. Each player scored a single goal, and Grabovski drew penalty shot chances on 2 plays.
– On 2-on-1 rushes, Kessel and Kulemin had 6 shots each. Kessel didn’t score on any of his 2-on-1 opportunites while Kulemin potted 2 goals.
– High Quality (or A-graded) Scoring Chances* (see bottom of this post for an explanation) for the top six at 5v5: Kessel (43 taken, 7 goals, 16.3 ChS %); Grabovski (33 taken, 6 goals, 18.2 ChS %); Kulemin (30 taken, 13 goals, 43.3 ChS %); MacArthur (26 taken, 8 goals, 30.8 %); Bozak (22 taken, 6 goals, 27.3 ChS %); Lupul (19 taken, 6 goals, 31.6 ChS %)
SCORING AREA (in the green and teal areas):
* – Grade A scoring chances (aka High Quality SCs) – Prime chances for a goal. For those that aren’t goals, the puck didn’t go in due to either a quality save by the goalie, or the shooter missing the goal. Odd man rushes, breakaways, rebounds (almost always), and otherwise defensively uncontested scoring chances are given this grade.
And I might as well list the criteria for other two grades that I give out, FWIW:
Grade B chances – A shot taken from within the "slot" and lower part of the circles nearest the goal (the green part in the above diagram) is given this rating if the chance doesn’t fall under the "A" criteria.
Grade C chances – Usually a shot from outside the scoring chance area through screens or traffic in front of the goal, or a shot taken from the higher part of the scoring area (the teal part in the diagram).
