Leafs Division Records

In the last game of the season the Leafs lost to Montreal and tied the season series with them 3-3. The Leafs beat or tied every team in their division in their season series and won the season series against the Western Conference (pretty notable given the Leafs aren’t great and the West dominates the East) so I wanted to see where the Leafs lost their points.
The Northeast Division:
 WLOTL
BOS420
BUF321
MTL330
OTT321
Total1392
The Leafs got 28 of a possible 48 points against their own division. Over 82 games that’s a 96 point pace. Not setting the league on fire but playing at a decent pace.
The Atlantic Division:
 WLOTL
NJD211
NYI202
NYR130
PHI130
PIT211
Total884
The Atlantic division played the Leafs pretty tough. 20 points out of a possible 40 is an 82 point pace over the season. This is a division the Leafs need to play better against in the future.
The Southeast Division:
 WLOTL
ATL310
CAR220
FLA220
TBL031
WSH112
Total893
Getting one point in four games against Tampa, four points in four games against Washington and not doing better against bottom feeders like Atlanta and Florida gives the Leafs only 19 points out of a possible 40 against the Southeast. This is a 78 point pace over the course of the season.
The Northwest Division:
 WLOTL
CGY011
COL100
EDM110
MIN100
VAN020
Total341
The Leafs beat both American teams in the Northwest but only played them once. The Leafs then went 1-4-1 against the three Canadian teams in this division to finish on pace for 72 points against the Northwest.
The Central Division:
 WLOTL
CHI010
CLB010
DET010
STL100
NSH100
Total230
Facing what might be the toughest division in the NHL the Leafs went 2-3-0 to put them on pace for 66 points against this division over the course of a full season.
The Pacific Division:
 WLOTL
ANA100
DAL100
LAK100
PHX010
SJS100
Total41
0
The Leafs went 4-1-0 against the Pacific to finish on pace for 130 points against this division. Thank Reimer for that, it’s almost entirely his work.
The Breakdown
There are three columns here; games played, point pace, and number of points needed in those played games to hit 93 points and grab a playoff spot in the East:
 GPPacePts Needed
NE2496-1
ATL20823
SE20784
NW8722
CEN5662
PAC5130-2
If it seems like those numbers are close, well, they are. Had the Leafs turned one regulation loss into a regulation win against the Atlantic, Southeast, Northwest and Central divisions they’d have finished with eight extra points and a playoff berth. Had they played better against the team in eight place (the Rangers) they’d likely have needed to convert only two regulation losses into wins.
Another season in the books, we’ll have a more emotional eulogy in the future.
