Earlier today, everybody on Twitter dot com was mad about Elliotte Friedman’s belief that the Leafs would re-sign James van Riemsdyk.

The first period was a back-and-forth event that saw both teams trade a couple of decent chances, but to no avail. Zdeno Chara took an early delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass, but the Leafs were unable to get much going on the Power Play.

It was a 0-0 game after 1, with Zdeno Chara and Morgan Rielly ending up in the net, while the puck stayed out.

The Leafs outshot the Bruins 10-8 while playing one of their better opening periods in this recent span on games.

The second period was much of the same for both teams. The Bruins controlled a little more of the action early on, and ultimately struck first. Patrice Bergeron placed a perfect shot over the shoulder of Frederik Andersen to break the scoreless tie and put the Bruins up 1-0.

The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as the Bruins would take their third penalty of the period. With Matt Beleskey in the box, James van Riemsdyk and Nazem Kadri drove the net, and van Riemsdyk potted his 7th of the season to tie the game with 15 seconds left in the period.

It was a timely goal to knot things up once again before the second intermission.

The third period was where the Leafs could have lost in the worst of ways, particularly for one Joshua Leivo.

With Leivo, finally playing in back to back games for the first time since February, sitting in the penalty box, David Pastrnak potted his tenth of the season to put the Bruins up 2-1, because of course it had to be Leivo’s fault.

These Leafs, however, persevered. With Frederik Andersen pulled and exactly one minute left in the game, Mitch Marner found James van Riemsdyk in front of the net for the perfect tip past Khudobin, and the game was tied at 2.

After a near-disaster drop pass in the Leafs’ zone, Mitch Marner carried the puck down the ice and handed it off to Jake Gardiner, threw the puck on net for none other than Patty “Daddy” Marleau for the game-winner.

A thrilling end to a great game for Mitch Marner, who potted two assists, on the tying and winning goals.

The goal would briefly be reviewed to see if the Leafs were offside — they weren’t — and the good guys prevailed for a thrilling 3-2 comeback win.
