Leafs Postgame: Leafs Win! Kids Earn the W in NYC

The Toronto Maple Leafs rolled into New York City on the first half of a back-to-back. With wins in their last three games, the Leafs look to continue their rising stars’ hot streak.
THE RUNDOWN
- Frederik Andersen starts in net for Toronto. Henrik Lundqvist starts in net for the Rangers.
- At 4:49 in the first, William Nylander puts one behind Lundqvist for Toronto, with assists from Nazem Kadri and Matt Hunwick. 1-0 Leafs.
- Rangers’ Brady Skjei takes an interference penalty at 9:12 in the first. Toronto on the powerplay.
- Leafs’ Frederik Andersen gets called for holding at 13:40 in the first. Kadri goes to the box to serve the penalty. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Only 4 seconds after the penalty to Andersen expires, Jake Gardiner takes a holding penalty.
- Rangers’ Pirri takes a hooking call to negate the final 1:06 of the Gardiner penalty. 4-on-4 hockey.
- James van Riemsdyk scores with the assists from Mitch Marner and Tyler Bozak. 2-0 Leafs.
- Morgan Rielly called for holding early in the second period. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Rangers’ Clendening called for hooking. Toronto on the powerplay.
- Rangers’ Chris Kreider scores at the midway point of the second. 2-1 Leafs.
- van Riemsdyk called for delay of game. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Connor Brown scores with assists from Auston Matthews and Gardiner. 3-1 Leafs.
- With 9.1 seconds left in the second, Gardiner is called for hooking. Toronto starts the third on the penalty kill.
- Rangers’ Klein sits for 2 minutes for slashing with 6:52 left in the third period. Toronto on the powerplay.
- Connor Carrick scores with assists from Bozak and Marner. 4-1 Leafs.
- Toronto takes a late holding call in the third, with 4:07 to go.
- Rangers’ Miller scores with 1:25 left in the third. 4-2 Leafs.
BLUE WARRIOR
Blue Warrior tonight goes to Frederik Andersen. With 34/36 saves and his current 0.944 SV%, Andersen is (finally) settling into his groove as Toronto’s number one. This is the Freddy we want.
SHOUTOUT
Tonight’s shoutout though, goes to the whole dang team. Sure, they flubbed the puck a few times. And sure, they could definitely work with Andersen on the difference between ‘creating traffic’ and ‘getting in the way’… But tonight? Tonight they looked good. Tonight they looked promising. They looked like a team that wanted to play together and win together. They didn’t look like a couple of stars and a bunch of rentals, or that-one-guy-and-who? The Leafs tonight looked like contenders, if not this year, then very soon.

The Maple Leafs play the second game in their back-to-back tomorrow night. Tomorrow’s game takes place at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, against the Ottawa Senators. Puck drops at 7pm.
