Leafs Postgame: Same song, different dagger

I’m starting to think I should stop writing postgame recaps. The Leafs have blown solid leads every time I’ve done them… Leafs lose 5-4 in the shootout to the Chicago Blackhawks.

THE RUNDOWN

  • Artem Anisimov scores early into the first from a pass from Artemi Panarin. 1-0 Blackhawks
  • After a tense penalty kill, Tyler Bozak ties it up with 14 seconds left in the first period. Tied game 1-1
  • Nazem Kadri went off on a high-sticking penalty early in the second, followed soon after by Kruger for holding.
  • William Nylander scores on the powerplay with the assist from Auston Matthews. 2-1 Leafs
  • Tyler Motte scores his second NHL goal, tying the game. 2-2.
  • Two Leafs penalties one after the other, Polak for interference and Carrick for hooking. Leafs on the PK for close to 4 minutes.
  • James van Riemsdyk puts one away to make it 3-2 in the final minutes of period 2.
  • Nylander scores his second of the game fives minutes into the third to make it 4-2 Leafs.
  • Anisimov scores to make it 4-3 Leafs
  • Former Leafs Richard Panik ties it up 4-4. Game goes to overtime. No score in OT.
  • Chicago takes it in the shootout. 5-4

BLUE WARRIOR

William Nylander gets this game’s Blue Warrior. With his two goals, this game and his constant presence in the earlier games this season, Nylander is proving to be a force to be reckoned with for the Leafs. Put him together with Matthews and Hyman and you have close to perfection in a single line.

SHOUTOUT  BUT WHY…

No shoutouts tonight. Tonight, I want to ask a question. Perhaps someone who is smarter than me will be able to explain why Peter Holland was the first cab off the rank in the shootout? I have seen the gifs of him scoring shootout goals. But in this particular case, why not see what your new kids can do? It’s only the 4th game of the season. Why not throw Marner out there and see how he does in a shootout? Why not see if Hyman or Zaitsev or Carrick have any snazzy shots up their sleeve? You’ve already conceded a point to the other team, it’s early in the season… why not?

COMING UP NEXT

The Maple Leafs next play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, October 25 at home in the Air Canada Centre. Puck drops at 7:30pm.
