Leafs prospect Ian Scott’s new phoenix-inspired mask unveiled

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending prospect Ian Scott has a new mask for the 2021–22 campaign, long-time design collaborator Dave Fried revealed Thursday.

Fried, a Calgary-based artist whose other clients include NHL goaltenders Tristan Jarry and Adin Hill, unveiled Scott’s new headwear in an Instagram post on Thursday afternoon.

The mask depicts a pair of fiery blue phoenix creatures interspersed with multiple blue leaves that closely resemble the Toronto Maple Leafs’ primary logo.

The back portion of the mask features the logos of the Prince Albert Raiders and Westwood Warriors, two hockey organizations Scott played for during his formative years in the sport.

“I’ve been painting for Ian [since] before his junior career. One of my first clients!” Fried said in the caption of his Instagram post Wednesday. “His first mask we did was a phoenix theme similar to this.

“It was so cool when he asked to do another updated version for his pro mask design,” Fried added.

Scott, 22, missed the entire 2019–20 season and most of 2020–21 with a hip injury. He ultimately made six professional appearances in 2020–21, splitting time between the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The Western Hockey League named Scott its goaltender of the year for the 2018–19 season. Playing with the Raiders, Scott posted a 38–8–2 record and a .932 save percentage in 49 games.
