Leafs Prospect Update: December 10th, 2012

With the WHL trade deadline fast approaching, the Moose Jaw Warriors this past week sent St. Louis Blues prospect Joel Edmundson to the Kamloops Blazers for Tyler Bell, Jayden Halbgewachs, and a 1st round pick in 2015.
Yes, none of these players have anything to with the Toronto Maple Leafs. I bring this up because this trade quite clearly indicates that Moose Jaw, currently 7th in their conference and barely holding onto a playoff spot, is looking to the future as opposed to building up for a long postseason run.
And while that may still be true, Warriors GM Alan Millar told the Moose Jaw Times-Herald this past week that Leafs top prospect Morgan Rielly is not in play. Not only is Rielly staying in Moose Jaw, but it appears that extenuating circumstances may be diminishing his trade value. From the Times-Herald’s Matthew Gourlie…
"Millar said that the on-going NHL labour negotiations has limited interest in Rielly. With the potential of Rielly being called into camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs and possibly staying up with the team at a moments notice, the interest in a deal is maybe not what some people would perceive."
On a related note, Brian Burke has said that Rielly will not be pulled from a World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia if the Leafs’ training camp begins after he’s left.

Moving on… My apologies to Tony Cameranesi, whom I may have jinxed. Last week, I gushed about his offensive output. This weekend, he was held pointless in two games against the Bemidji State Beavers. Dam.
Garret Sparks had another fantastic week in-between the pipes, going 3-0-0 with a 1.61 GAA and .963 SV%. Best yet, an 8-0 Guelph win over Erie on Saturday means that Sparks’ court shutouts are good for 1st in the OHL (and good for a 1st place tie in the CHL with Saskatoon’s Andrey Makarov).
Speaking of Guelph, Matt Finn scored his first, second, and third points this weekend since returning to the lineup after a bout with mononucleosis (the kissing disease, gross!). With a goal and two assists, Finn has 9 goals and 21 points in 26 games played.
With his six game point streak (4 goals, 5 assists) broken in a Sunday afternoon loss to Windsor, Oshawa’s Tyler Biggs is once again a middling prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and peace has been restored to the internet.
Lastly, Brad Ross scored his first goal as a professional hockey player today in a 3-2 Marlies loss, even after he nearly split himself in half trying to stay onside for Greg McKegg‘s third period goal.
