Leafs Prospect Update: November 5th, 2012

Things have gone from bad to worse for Ryan Rupert, one of two Leafs’ 6th round picks in this past draft. Still without a goal this season, Rupert was on a 7-game pointless drought before injuring his shoulder in London’s 6-3 loss to Windsor on Thursday night.
Rupert is expected to miss 4-6 weeks of action, and will now likely miss his opportunity to suit up for Team OHL in the Canada-Russia Subway Super Series.
More on the injury front: Skellefteå AIK defenceman Petter Granberg will be out of action until the new year thanks to collarbone surgery. According to this Swedish report the Leafs chose surgery for Granberg in hopes to get him back on the ice as quickly as possible. Granberg, a 4th round pick in 2010, signed a three-year entry level deal with the Leafs back in May.
Hey, how about some good news? Connor Brown just can’t seem to stop scoring goals. In fact, he’s got 8 goals in his last 6 games. With 21 points in 18 games, Brown is playing well above his 6th-round draft status, and seems to have developed some chemistry playing alongside OHL phenom Connor McDavid. A sign of things to come in Leaf land? (No, it’s not.)
Tyler Biggs had a solid Sunday evening, scoring once and adding 3 assists in a 5-2 Oshawa victory over Kingston. Biggs now has 19 points in 19 games, but for fear of appearing either too Pro-Biggs or Anti-Biggs, I’m just going to say “cool beans” and move on all nonchalant-like.
Remember when I lamented over Guelph’s Garret Sparks up-and-down weekend last week? Well, this weekend showed marked improvement – Sparks was only pulled once in three outings. To be fair, two strong performances against Oshawa on Friday (44 saves on 45 shots) and London on Sunday (26 saves on 27 shots) will help him make a case for his inclusion on Team USA’s World Junior roster.
