Leafs Recall Rich Clune

By now we’re all used to the yo-yo approach the Leafs have been using with Marlies players this season and the two most frequent participants in this process have been Mark Arcobello and Rich Clune. Since it was Mark Arcobello recalled to the Leafs last time, that means…

There’s not a whole lot to say here that hasn’t been said the last few times that Rich Clune has been recalled. He’s not really going to offer anything in the form of offense, or defense, and he’s not likely to see much ice time. 

What his recall does signal is the possibility that the Leafs want a more physical presence against either Chicago or Boston this weekend. I’d assume he’s here for Boston, as it’s nice to have someone to punch Zac Rinaldo in the face. 

The move does strike me as particularly bizarre since the Leafs struggled to score on the last place team with a rookie goaltender in net last night, and you’d think that an offensive player like Mark Arcobello or Jeremy Morin might have been prioritized, but really it doesn’t make too much of a difference who’s getting the call based on their likely usage. 

This gives the Leafs 13 forwards on their roster now, so it could just be a matter of Clune practicing with the team, giving some players maintenance days, and scratching him for the games.
