The trade deadline is just over two weeks away and it looks like the Leafs are looking to make some sort of move before then. Perhaps a move to grab rental winger Micheal Ferland.
According to Nick Kypreos on Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines segment during the second intermission of the game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Leafs are interested in Ferland.
He also specifically mentions that they are unwilling to unload top prospects Timothy Liljegren, Rasmus Sandin, or their 2020 first-round pick, for any rental player.
It makes sense since GM Kyle Dubas was quoted earlier this year, saying that he will more likely acquire players with term (this was before the Muzzin trade).
Ferland would definitely be a solid addition – providing some physicality while also being a winger that can get you some goals in tight circumstances. He currently has 14 goals and 14 assists in 48 games for the Hurricanes this season. He’s also a positive possession player for the past two seasons, but being on the Hurricanes pretty much guarantees that.
There are certainly other contending teams that can offer much more than the Leafs can, but with the massive connection between the two teams scouting each other recently, you have to think something is going to happen.
