Leafs Special Teams

I threw together two charts on the Leafs special teams play. The dots are their performance in that single game and the line is their season average at that point. Notice any disturbing trends for the Leafs PP and PK?

The Leafs’ PP started out poorly, got it together for a couple games and then disappeared. With a team as bad at scoring as the 10-11 Leafs the special teams will decide an awful lot of games. This is a team that needs to make the most of its power play and be stingy on the PK.
Similarly the PK that had been pretty good so far has fallen apart with the departure of Mike Zigomanis. Zigomanis was killing penalties well and winning faceoffs even with limited minutes. John Mitchell made a nice play on Kaberle/Brown’s goal last night but then failed at clearing the puck before Alex Semin’s tying goal in the third.
