With their fifth round pick, 142nd overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Swiss winger Frabcrie Herzog, the 59th ranked European skater according to NHL Central Scouting
Herzog spent last season splitting time between EV Zug of the Swiss National League and its U20 squad. With Zug U20, Herzog scored an impressive 28 goals and 45 points in 32 games. In limited ice time with the men’s team, Herzog managed two goals and two assists in 20 games.
He also represented Switzerland in seven games with their U19 International Junior team, picking up 2 goals.
Unlike their first two selections in Frederik Gauthier and Carter Verhaeghe, the Leafs look to be reaching for high-end offensive potential in Herzog.
Little is known about the 6’2, 176lb scoring winger, but that should change if Herzog jumps the pond next season, as Leafs GM Dave Nonis indicated he might. We’ll likely hear more about where he’s playing in the coming days, as the CHL Import Draft takes place is taking place this Wednesday, July 3rd.
