Leafs vs.Flyers Re-Cap: Separating the Men from the Marlies

Look, it’s the pre-season. These games are a chance for the guys who know their job is safe to their legs under them, they guys on the bubble to prove the belong, and everyone else to show management what they can offer the team in the future. The only thing we should take away from tonight is that: Oh man are the Marlies going to be fun to watch this year.
With the first round of cuts likely coming after tomorrow’s here are some thoughts on who stays and who goes:
  1. Blacker really impressed me. I like his speed and he is not afraid to rush the net or sneak up on the PP. He looks comfortable with the puck and should see plenty of PP time with the Marlies.
  2. Aside from the brutal giveaway that lead to the Flyers 4th goal I liked what I saw from Colborne. He has some speed and is creative with the puck. He created a few scoring chances and knows where to get on the ice.
  3. They’ll both be Leafs one day. For now they’ll make the Marlies a more competetative and watchable team.
  4. Gysbers had some trouble playing the point on the PP made a few giveaways and overhandled the puck. That being said I like his size and he has some offensive upside, he needs more time with the Marlies.
  5. They’ll both be Leafs one day. For now they’ll make the Marlies a more competetative and watchable team.
  6. One player who isn’t going anywhere is Nazem Kadri. Kadri was the best Leaf on the ice tonight. The Nifty Mittens were on display tonight, while these dangles won’t always work against top competition he deserves a spot on this team. He has good speed and awareness, and as Birky said on Twitter: a "sixth sense for passing". Put him on a sheltered scoring line with Bozak and Armstrong and give him plenty of PP time and we’re golden. He is ready for the NHL, let’s not expect too much but he’ll learn more playing with the Leafs than with the Marlies.
Last night was a good indication of which players should stay, and which players should go. That’s what the pre-season is for everyone, just relax.
