LGD: Are They Ever Going to Cut Someone?

It’s another Leafs preseason game. I think they’ve played one hundred of these so far. The only solace I can take in this month is that there was no World Cup of Hockey, and every year without one of those is a glorious time to be alive.
The Leafs website tells me that they are playing in Detroit tonight against the Red Wings, so I learned that today. The interesting thing about the Red Wings is that they are a bad team. Their new arena is probably nice, but their team is terrible. With the Leafs icing what looks pretty close to an opening night roster, they’d truly bring shame to Toronto if they allow this game to be close at all.
Leafs Lineup
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Kadri-Komarov
van Riemsdyk-Bozak-Marner
Martin-Moore-Brown
Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Rosen-Borgman
Andersen
Kaskisuo
Red Wings Lineup (definitely not 20 hobos pulled off a boxcar)
Tatar-Zetterberg-Nyquist
Mantha-Larkin-Frk
Helm-Nielsen-Sheehan
Booth-Street-Glendening
Ericsson-Green
DeKeyser-Daley
Ouellet-Hicketts
Howard
McCollum
This is probably the best the Wings have to offer and that’s terrific. It will be nice to be on the other side of terrible play by David Booth, but I am worried that Babcock is going to try and slap a Leafs jersey on Glendening during the intermission. Anyway, I love watching the Red Wings because few things give me the same joy as the rapid decline of Dylan Larkin.

Loose Change

  • Mike Babcock hinted at Roman Polak playing tomorrow night, so with any luck that will be the last time we ever see Polak in a Leafs jersey.
  • Mark Masters is stating it’s do or die time for the rookie Swedish D and for Dominic Moore tonight. If anyone asks me (they won’t) I’d send all three of them down to the Marlies to start the year. I don’t doubt that the Swedes could return very soon, but I’m not ready to put them ahead of Marincin just yet and in that case they might as well play big minutes in the AHL.
  • Only three players on waivers today, but Ville Pokka is a promising young right handed defenseman, so…. LET’S CORRADO HIM! FINNISH STYLE!
There really isn’t a whole lot left to say about this. It’s preseason hockey. It needs to end. Get to the cuts. Claim Pokka. Buds All Day.
