The New York Islanders come into town tonight hot off a… 5-3 loss Monday night against the Minnesota Wild at home.
Hrm, let’s try that again.
The New York Islanders come into town tonight just a point outside of the final wildcard berth in the Eastern Conference, albeit with a game more played than the Columbus Blue Jackets. With 21 games to play in their season, they’re not in must-win territory, but definitely in need of as many points as they can get down the stretch run.
Was that better?
The one thing that holds these two teams together: they’re 1-2 in the league in shots against! Is that a good thing? It’s a good thing, right?
So expect about 100 shots to hit the net tonight between the two teams.
The two teams met once earlier this season, a 5-0 victory for the Leafs which some dubbed the greatest game of all time, seeing as it featured goals from Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Kasperi Kapanen, Travis Dermott, and Justin Holl.

The lineup looks the same as Tuesday night, save for Connor Carrick replacing Roman Polak on the team’s bottom pairing. These forward lines have seen the Leafs be as productive as they’ve been, well, basically ever, so it’s great to see them sticking with what’s worki- BUT wait, there’s more!
Who could the mystery man be? Will we see Matt Martin against his former team? To be continued…

  • Would you believe that this lineup has scored the fourth most goals in the entire NHL?
  • John Tavares, Mat Barzal, and Josh Bailey have already hit the 60-point barrier this season
  • Anders Lee has hit 30 goals for the second year in a row.
  • Cal Clutterbuck has 178 hits this year. He’s only taken 84 shots on net.
  • No Islander has scored against the Leafs this season.
  • Remember when this team had a fisherman on their jerseys?

Starting goalies

Frederik Andersen draws in tonight for Toronto, while Jaroslav Halak puts on the pads for the Isles. Andersen’s coming in as hot as ever, with wins in six of seven games and having allowed more than three goals just once since January 10th. With the league’s most saves and minutes played this season, his .923 save percentage has, as we all know, been a huge part of the Leafs’ success. Halak, who sports a .911 save percentage on the season, has won just two of his last seven appearances.
