The Toronto Maple Leafs have their new-coach bump on their side as they try to even out some negative road trends this weekend.
The Maple Leafs are an even-money underdog against the -120 favourite Colorado Avalanche with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Saturday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto enters its second game under new head coach Sheldon Keefe with a 1-7 record in its last eight away games as an underdog. The Maple Leafs are 3-6 in their last nine away games against the Western Conference, with the total finishing UNDER seven times at online sports betting sites. Colorado is 6-5 in its last 11 home games against Eastern Conference teams, with the total going OVER seven times.

Maple Leafs at Avalanche | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Maple Leafs are 10-10-4 this season after a 3-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday. The first positive effect of the Keefe regime appears to be an improvement at getting shots through traffic which bodes well for an offence that ranks second in the 31-team NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (53.82 percent) behind the leadership of centers John Tavares and Auston Matthews. The Maple Leafs rank 14th in goals scored (3.13 per game) and 23rd in goals against (3.33). Toronto’s power play ranks 19th (17.6 percent) and its penalty killing unit ranks 25th (74.1).
Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen is 10-5-3 this season with a 2.66 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. He has better rate stats (2.32 GAA, .927 save percentage) on the road than he does at home.
The Avalanche are 13-7-2 this season and are led by one of the league’s top centers, Nathan MacKinnon, who is part of a virtual one-line offensive show with wingers André Burakovsky and Joonas Donskoi. Having three core forwards out of the lineup has probably contributed to Colorado ranking 22nd in the NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (48.97 percent), but it has yet to affect them on the outcome end as they are fourth in the NHL in goals scored (3.55 per game) and ninth in goals against (2.91). Colorado’s power play ranks 17th (19.3 percent) and its penalty killing unit ranks 22nd (78.2).
Philipp Grubauer, Colorado’s No. 1 goalie, is 7-4-2 this season with a 2.76 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, but the Avalanche have lost in four of his last five starts.
The Maple Leafs will have a three-day break before visiting the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.
