The Toronto Maple Leafs have not only struggled in the tailend of back-to-back games recently, but they’re facing what should be a motivated opponent.
The Maple Leafs are -105 underdogs with the Washington Capitals ranking as a -115 home favourite with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Wednesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto, which beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 on Tuesday, is 2-6 in its last eight games when it played the previous day. The total has gone UNDER in eight of the last 11 games when the Maple Leafs were playing back to back.

Maple Leafs at Capitals | OddsShark Matchup Report

Toronto is 4-2-1 this season and is beginning to establish itself as a potent offensive team. With Auston Matthews having scored six goals in seven games, the Maple Leafs come into the night ranked fourth in the NHL in goal scoring (4.00 per game) and a somewhat concerning 18th in goals against (3.29), which might be an indicator they’ll go against their total trends when playing without rest. Special teams are a similar story for Toronto whose power play is eighth (28.0 per cent) while the penalty kill is 16th (81 per cent).
Backup goalie Michael Hutchinson, who is 0-0-1 this season with a 3.85 goals-against average and .894 save percentage, will likely start after Frederik Andersen played on Tuesday.
Washington is 3-2-2 after a 6-3 home defeat against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. A team of the Capitals’ experience under the leadership of captain and left wing Alex Ovechkin should get the benefit of the doubt that it will come out with a better effort. Five of the Capitals’ last eight home games against Atlantic Division teams have finished OVER at online betting sites, suggesting Washington might be willing to trade chances. The Capitals are 16th in goals scored (3.14) and 19th in goals against (3.29). Special teams-wise, the Capitals have a 16th-ranked power play (22.2 per cent) and 10th-ranked penalty kill (84.0 per cent).
The Capitals’ No. 1 goalie Braden Holtby was pulled early in the Colorado game. Teams will usually go back to the starter after an early hook. Holtby is 1-1-2 with a 4.27 GAA and .846 save percentage in four games this season.
The Maple Leafs have a two-day break before hosting the Boston Bruins in a playoff rematch on Saturday.
