The Toronto Maple Leafs seem to have their road form back as they begin a California trip against the Pacific Division’s lower-echelon teams. The Maple Leafs are -155 away favourites while the San Jose Sharks are +135 home underdogs with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Maple Leafs are 8-4 in their last 12 games as an away favourite with the total finishing OVER eight times at online betting sites. They are also 10-5 in their last 15 away games against the Pacific Division, but the total has gone UNDER in six of their last seven matchups in that sample. The Sharks are 4-6 in their last 10 games as a home underdog with the total finishing UNDER six times.

The Maple Leafs are 35-23-8 and have scored 13 goals during a three-game win streak as they have made more out of their strong shot metrics that place them sixth out of 31 NHL teams in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (52.1 percent). Toronto’s primary forwards such as Auston Matthews, who has two goals in as many games, and William Nylander, who has five points is as many games, should have a fair amount of offensive zone time as the Sharks have one of the NHL’s weakest offences. The Maple Leafs are first in goals scored (3.52 per cent) and 28th in goals against (3.24). On special teams, the Toronto power play is ranked fifth (23.8 percent) and the penalty killing unit is ranked 24th (76.9).
Jack Campbell, who has an 11-10-3 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and .904 save percentage, will make his first start in 17 days. Campbell has allowed just two goals in four of his last five starts.
The Sharks are 28-33-4 and are coming off a 5-0 home win against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Saturday, but they are just 5-11 this season with two days between games. While big names such as centers Logan Couture and Joe Thornton are still around, helping San Jose rank 14th in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (50.6 percent), the Sharks have had season-long issues with scoring and defensive zone play. They are 28th in goals scored (2.57) and 25th in goals against (3.20). San Jose’s power play is ranked 27th (15.5 percent) and the penalty killing unit is ranked first (86.3).
Martin Jones, who has a 16-19-2 record with a 2.99 goals-against average and .897 save percentage, is in line to start in goal for San Jose. It is a small sample, but Jones’ 3.61 GAA and .880 save percentage against Atlantic Division teams is his weakest stat-line against any of the four divisions in the NHL this season.
Toronto’s three-game road trip also includes back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks on Thursday and Friday.
