Maple Leafs Job Fair: Laurence Gilman’s Resume

Jon Steitzer
This applicant may or may not have applied to the Leafs for
the GM role. It’s entirely possible that we broke into the Canucks Army office
and stole this resume from their applicant pool from last season. Their loss
may be our gain as we take a look at the Canucks “master negotiator”.

LAURENCE GILMAN ESQ.

To work for an organization that wants to build the right
way and not immediately undo my sound negotiating work by delivering a
wheelbarrow full of cash to Ryan Miller on July 1st.

Work Experience

VP Hockey
Operations/Assistant General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks (2008-Present)
Remember how everyone wondered how the Canucks could afford both Sedins,
who got it done? Me. Remember that incredibly reasonable Ryan Kesler contract?
The Hamhuis deal? That circumventacular Luongo deal? Those were me. Feel free
to ignore the Sbisa, and Dorsett signings this year, I’ve been busy updating my
LinkedIn
profile
because Jim Benning doesn’t use me nearly as well as Mike Gillis
did. I have also been head of amateur scouting, but if you look at my draft
history you can see that I’d happily yield that responsibility to Mark Hunter.
Senior VP Hockey
Operations/Assistant General Manager of the Phoenix Coyotes (1996-2007)
If you want to get your PhD in hockey management Phoenix was the place to
do it. With our entire budget tied up in paying Gretzky to suck at coaching, we
managed to provide him with enough talent that it was clear that he was the
problem. I also GM’d some pretty decent San Antonio Rampage teams during that
time.

Achievements

  • We had that Stanley Cup appearance that worked out so well for our city
  • Had a good enough reputation to retain employment after being part of the Mike
    Gillis regime
  • Paid most people connected with the Phoenix Coyotes in the early 2000s
  • Time Magazine Person of the Year 2006

Best Trade

After years in Vancouver I’m not really familiar with the concept of a
trade working out, but after seeing Cody Hodgson bust and to actually have a
useable, affordable pest in Zack Kassian, we can hang our hats on that.

Worst Trade

Pick any trade involving a goaltender. We turned one of the best tandems in
the league into Shawn Matthias and Bo Horvat.

Best Draft Pick

Getting Keith Yandle in the fourth round while in Phoenix was pretty solid,
but more recently getting Jordan Subban in the 4th and getting
McCann and Shinkaruk with late 1st round picks seems pretty decent. Also
keep an eye on Thatcher Demko.

Worst Draft Pick

Can I reaffirm the fact that Mike Gillis had the final decision? I guess
the fact that we haven’t produced a significant NHLer from our system besides
Bo Horvat during my time here is the biggest flaw, but if you need a name let’s
go with Brendan Guance.

Personal Interests

  • Talking law
  • Going to garage sales and getting chipped coffee cups for a nickel

Hiring Manager Notes

When I first saw that Laurence Gilman
had applied for the GM position I was thrilled. He comes highly recommended
from most fans of the Vancouver Canucks, usually citing his contract negotiation
skills. So far it appears that skill set seems to be handled strongly by
Brandon Pridham for the Leafs, so it’s debatable that the Leafs need to double
down on it. Gilman’s track record with drafting is much more suspect, and his
trade history has been limited to small depth moves for the most part.
Gilman’s biggest asset
may be that he’s not someone whose history demonstrates that he’ll rush the
process, and has a respect for cap management. As a conventional GM I would
pass on him easily, but with the Shanahan, by committee approach he’s an
interesting voice in the room that provides some NHL experience to a group that
is lacking in old boys club members.
