If you want to get your PhD in hockey management Phoenix was the place to
do it. With our entire budget tied up in paying Gretzky to suck at coaching, we
managed to provide him with enough talent that it was clear that he was the
problem. I also GM’d some pretty decent San Antonio Rampage teams during that
time.

After years in Vancouver I’m not really familiar with the concept of a
trade working out, but after seeing Cody Hodgson bust and to actually have a
useable, affordable pest in Zack Kassian, we can hang our hats on that.

Pick any trade involving a goaltender. We turned one of the best tandems in
the league into Shawn Matthias and Bo Horvat.

Best Draft Pick
Getting Keith Yandle in the fourth round while in Phoenix was pretty solid,
but more recently getting Jordan Subban in the 4th and getting
McCann and Shinkaruk with late 1st round picks seems pretty decent. Also
keep an eye on Thatcher Demko.

Can I reaffirm the fact that Mike Gillis had the final decision? I guess
the fact that we haven’t produced a significant NHLer from our system besides
Bo Horvat during my time here is the biggest flaw, but if you need a name let’s
go with Brendan Guance.

When I first saw that Laurence Gilman
had applied for the GM position I was thrilled. He comes highly recommended
from most fans of the Vancouver Canucks, usually citing his contract negotiation
skills. So far it appears that skill set seems to be handled strongly by
Brandon Pridham for the Leafs, so it’s debatable that the Leafs need to double
down on it. Gilman’s track record with drafting is much more suspect, and his
trade history has been limited to small depth moves for the most part.

Gilman’s biggest asset
may be that he’s not someone whose history demonstrates that he’ll rush the
process, and has a respect for cap management. As a conventional GM I would
pass on him easily, but with the Shanahan, by committee approach he’s an
interesting voice in the room that provides some NHL experience to a group that
is lacking in old boys club members.
