The stats

Where is Eggenberger ranked?

What do the scouts say?

Big and strong Swiss wing who is a deceptively quick attacker who appears in close whenever he chooses to do so. Already stronger than most in his Swiss league, he creates chances along the wall and down low. He has a sniper’s hands from the perimeter and hockey sense to find the open areas to receive pucks. This big horse gallops in from nowhere and lets go with an offensive stampede. Prototypical power wing with size, shot, balance and nice North-South skating ability. Plays on special teams with success and has a great defensive presence at both ends. Wins puck battle on the wall and in the corners. Has a goal scorer’s touch and is very difficult to move off the puck. A solid penalty-killer who diagnoses well. Unselfish and makes positive things happen when he is carrying.  —Bill Placzek, draftsite.com
He’s got size (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) and the ability to play a two-way game. Eggenberger thinks the game well and can really shoot the puck.  –Sam Cosentino, Sportsnet

Why the Leafs should draft Nando Eggenberger

Eggenberger didn’t have the greatest draft-1 year, but it appears he’s got the tools to put it together at the NHL level. Already a step ahead of most playing with men and in an “NHL body”, whatever that means, Eggenberger has the possibility to come over to the AHL over the next few seasons and really develop his game on the North American ice. An absolute star in the Swiss U20 league, Eggenberger seems like he’s ready to be a full-time pro.
Getting into the later rounds of the draft, there really just isn’t that much intel available about these guys beyond their statline and a few clips here and there. You’re always taking a little bit of a risk picking a player out of a league with few draft eligibles, but that’s just even more incentive for the Leafs’ scouting staff to have done their job.
And plus, could you really be mad about picking a guy named Nando Eggenberger?
