Mitch Marner was among the finalist for this year’s Selke Trophy but ultimately lost out to Patrice Bergeron who won it for the sixth time in his career.
Ultimately, Marner finished third for the Selke but he wasn’t the only Leaf to receive votes.
Joining him is Auston Matthews who finished 14th in the voting with 22 points and one second-place vote. Marner got three first-place votes, 21 second-place votes, and 39 third-place votes from the PHWA.
Marner is coming off the best statistical season of his career as he nearly hit the century mark in scoring with a team-leading 99 points (30 goals and 69 assists) in 80 games played. He also led the Leafs in playoff scoring with 14 points (three goals and 11 assists) to help propel his team past the first round for the first time since 2004.
This incredible offensive production combined with his importance to the Leafs in all situations is what helped him earn his first finalist bid for an NHL Award. Although he stood little chance of snagging the award since it was Bergeron’s to lose, seeing Marner finally get some recognization for his two-way play is a well-deserved achievement. This might not be the last time he is in the running for this award if this trends continue.
Last season, he finished 16th in voting while Matthews also placed 10th and David Kampf came in at 27th for the trophy.
The awards remain ongoing and you can catch the action on Sportsnet.
