Morning-after recap: Time for the Leafs to start learning from their mistakes

The outcome of this game wasn’t what we were hoping for, but at least we got a fun one. And with it, some more lessons learned for a young team (hopefully) on the rise.
There maybe is an argument to be made that the Leafs could’ve won this one if Matthews’ first goal hadn’t been called back, but there’s a lot more the Leafs could’ve done to keep the puck out of their own net, too. That’s been a theme lately.
Check out the goals below, including three two from the Leafs in the second period.
1-0 Bad Guys (Gabriel Bourque goal)
After chasing the puck into the corner, Gabriel Bourque gets right in front and picks up a rebound to slip the puck past Frederik Andersen for the first goal of the game. Avs have scored first in every game of their now ten-game winning streak (and 23 times this season).
1-1 (Patrick Marleau goal)
Love to see Patrick Marleau use his speed…but for some reason the Avs were way more focused on Komarov along the boards, and left Marleau wide open at the top of the circle.
2-1 (just kidding)
Avs coach Jared Bednar challenged for goalie interference and the officials ruled no goal.
Auston Matthews was less than pleased with the result. Same, dude.
2-1 For real! (Auston Matthews goal + epic celly)
Has anything ever been so sweet?! Auston Matthews comes out on his very next shift after having his goal called back, and he makes sure everyone knows this one counts.
2-2 (Nail Yakupov goal)
Alex Kerfoot was able to steal the puck from Andreas Borgman, Borgman and Roman Polak both chased Kerfoot down the ice, and Mitch Marner couldn’t get to Nail Yakupov in time to help out Freddy.
3-2 Avs (Blake Comeau goal)
There were several different perspectives on this goal to be found on Twitter (of course), but it all comes down to miscommunication. Dermott thought Matthews had Comeau and went to cover the trailer, Matthews let up on Comeau, andddddddd yeah.
4-2 Avs (Gabriel Landeskog empty-netter)
No one really cared enough to post a gif at this point, but Landeskog did truly score an empty net goal to seal Colorado’s win (after several failed attempts while Andersen was on the bench).
The Leafs are going on the road for two games before the All-Star break, so next up is Chicago on Wednesday. Puck drop will be a little later than usual, at 8:00pm.
