Movers And Shakers – San Jose a fit for Phaneuf?

It’s well known that Dion Phaneuf is one of the players that the
Leafs would like to trade this offseason, even though Mike Babcock is a
“fan” of him. After the Red Wings suddenly became uninterested in
Phaneuf, potential suitors have been a little harder to identify. But in a recent James Mirtle piece, he believes that the San Jose Sharks could be a fit:
The
NHL’s free-agent negotiation window opens on Thursday, and with their
wish list, the Sharks could be one of the busier teams.
The other potential fit for them? Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf.
There
are a lot of factors that make sense there. San Jose is one of those
teams any player will waive their no-trade clause to go to. They’re in a
win-now mode.
San
Jose is in a weird situation. They are said to be “rebuilding”, but
haven’t moved out veterans like Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau – not
that they should. It seems like they want to go for it once more with
those two leading the way, while guys like Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, and Matt Nieto
develop behind them. And with them missing the playoffs for the first
time since 2003, management could be pressuring Doug Wilson to make some
moves to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
So
the interest from San Jose in Phaneuf could make sense, and as Mirtle
mentions, the Sharks are a team that Phaneuf would likely waive his
no-trade to or has already included in his list. But why would the Leafs
be interested in trading with San Jose?
The
Leafs also want to get another pick higher in the draft – they own four
and 24 right now – and are confident they can find very good players
outside the top five or six no-brainer picks. Toronto can also take a
contract to make the money work.
The
bolded is the most important part of this for the Leafs. San Jose owns
9th overall, and it is believed to be one of the picks in play,
according to Damien Cox.
And
with the Leafs reportedly being interested in Ivan Provorov and Mikko Rantanen – two players of a potential group that could be available at 9
– that pick would hold some tremendous value to Mark Hunter and Kyle
Dubas.
It’s
hard to imagine what a deal would look like between the two teams.
Phaneuf is not worth the 9th overall pick, but perhaps a deal involving
Phaneuf with some retained salary and James Reimer – which would address
San Jose’s search for a goalie – for 9th, plus taking on some salary
could work.
The
draft is just two days away, and rumours like these just make it ever
more intriguing to be a Leafs fan. Acquiring another high pick would be a
huge boost to the rebuild.
