Detroit took care of Toronto 5-2 on Sunday night, and the game wasn’t the only thing the Leafs lost yesterday. Matt Murray left the game in the first period after a collision with Lucas Raymond. Ilya Samsonov played well in relief but it wasn’t enough. Below are the highlights from the game.
Auston Matthews had the first prime scoring chance of the game. His wrist shot from the slot was denied by Alex Nedeljkovic:
Seconds later, Olli Maatta got the Red Wings on the board. Sam Lafferty fumbled the Connor Timmins pass at the blue line and Maatta was off to the races. 1-0 Wings:
The Leafs knotted it up with a power play marker as Adam Erne sat for cross checking. Calle Jarnkrok stays hot:
Jonatan Berggren broke the deadlock with a beautiful individual effort. The Leafs were caught puck-watching in the neutral zone and Berggren made them pay:
Late in the first Raymond lost an edge and took out Murray. The Leafs’ goaltender was removed from the game due to concussion protocol. He did not return. Samsonov played the rest of the game:
Dylan Larkin added an insurance tally for Detroit before the period ended. John Tavares coughed up the puck on the breakout and Larkin ripped a shot past Samsonov. 3-1 Wings:
Samsonov kept the Leafs in it in the second period. He made this glove save on Moritz Seider look easy:
The Leafs’ goaltender wasn’t done there. His post nearly betrayed him on this Robert Hagg chance but Samsonov reached back with the glove to keep it out:
Matthews was buzzing all game. He almost brought the Leafs within one with this opportunity off the rush. Nedeljkovic stopped him again:
Partway through the third period Toronto finally scored their second. Another power play goal for John Tavares. He tipped in the Morgan Reilly point shot to make it 3-2:
It wasn’t a one goal game for long. Larkin struck again five minutes later. He was in the right place at the right time. Samsonov made the save on Ben Chiarot but the rebound deflected off Larkin and into the net. 30 goals on the year for the Wings captain:
Berggren looked like he was going to make it 5-2 Wings. Instead Samsonov absolutely robbed him with the glove. It didn’t matter anyway. Larkin added an empty netter to complete the hat trick. 5-2 Red Wings final.
