NHL History: Dave Keon pots two shorthanded goals, a record, as Toronto Maple Leafs win 1963 Stanley Cup

Toronto Maple Leafs legend Dave Keon had one of the best nights of his NHL career today in 1963.

The 22-year-old had a great regular season for the Leafs in his second year scoring 28 goals and 56 points in 68 games. And in the playoffs, Keon his another level. In just 10 games, the centre scored seven goals and 12 points helping the Leafs win the Stanley Cup.

They hoisted that title today in 1963 in large part to Keon. The Noranda, Quebec native scored two shorthanded goals — setting a playoff record — as he and the Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in game five of the cup finals.

That year, Keon was awarded the Lady Byng trophy.

Keon joined the Leafs in 1960 and as a rookie, scored 20 goals and 45 points in 70 games as he posted a campaign awarding him the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie.

His time in Toronto came to an end in August 1975 when Keon joined the Minnesota Fightings Saints of the WHA, but that club folded before the season’s end. After bouncing around to the Indianapolis Racers (and the Fighting Saints once more), Keon landed with the New England Whalers with whom he would return to the NHL.

At 42 years old, Keon retired in June 1982.
