Tonight, two World War I inspired Original Six teams faced off against each other: Toronto Maple Leafs versus the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Leafs unveiled a shiny new forward lineup for this game in Chicago. Here’s Mark Masters’ tweet confirming the lines:

1st period

With the story line coming into this game being about how poor the Blackhawks powerplay has been, and with how good the Leafs’ penalty kill has been, one could only sigh when the Blackhawks went to the powerplay and very quickly scored.
The Leafs appeared to have scored, but because of goalie interference the goal was called back.
Shortly after, though, they would get one that counted from the brand new Kadri line:
The period ended with the score tied 1-1.

2nd period

This was an exciting period, with good chances from both teams. The energy level was incredibly high, making for a great hockey game.
Unfortunately, no goals were scored this period, so we went on to the 3rd still tied 1-1.

3rd period

In a laughable attempt at performing their duties, the referees in this game allowed this Chicago goal despite Anisimov clearly hitting Andersen in the face with his stick, and then sitting on him. Yes, I’m biased, and no, I don’t care.
Matthews missed a chance for what would essentially be a walk-off regulation goal with a few seconds left in the third, but unfortunately missed the opportunity.
So, we went off to overtime, tied 2-2.

Overtime

Nylander fought for a breakaway on the opening faceoff in OT, getting hacked on the hands on the way to the net which got a penalty shot. He would capitalize, giving the Leafs the win:

Final Thoughts

My three stars for the game tonight:
  1. Nylander
  2. Andersen
  3. Schmaltz
A great win for the Leafs, and a much needed two points.
The next game for Toronto will be tomorrow night, 8:30 pm ET in Dallas. See you there and go Leafs go!
