Postgame: Leafs Lose to Buffalo in Terrible Yet Familiar Fashion

The Leafs took on the Sabres tonight in what was supposed to be an easy win, and very likely should have been. The Sabres have been a pretty terrible team this season, and yet the Leafs have historically struggled against them, no matter which team was good or bad at the time.
Here’s your recap of the action.

1st period

The Leafs were down very early as the Sabres first capitalize on a powerplay rush by Sam Reinhart:
Then got some good puck luck as the puck bounces off of Jason Pominville into the net:
However, just before period came to an end, Leo Komarov buried a rebound shot from William Nylander to make it 2-1 heading into the second:

2nd period

This incredible passing play between Leo Komarov and Matt Martin (yes you read that right) brought the Leafs even at 2-2:
Another unfortunate bounce for the Leafs put the Sabres back on top at 3-2:
And, yet again, bad luck ailed the Leafs as this puck goes off the ref, to Ryan O’Reilly, to the back of the net:

3rd period

The 3rd was no different whatsoever for the Maple Leafs, as this possible goaltender interference call does not go their way:
The Leafs earned one back late to make it 5-3, but ultimately the effort was moot.

Final Thoughts

A rough game for the Leafs, without question. They had crappy puck luck, and dominated most of the 2nd period, but couldn’t get the mental errors to go away after the frustration of the game had set in. Many turnovers, many plays that were not smart, and ultimately a loss. Perhaps one they didn’t deserve, but a loss nonetheless.
My three stars for the night:
  1. Pominville
  2. Reinhart
  3. Marner
Have a good night ladies and gentlemen, and see you on Saturday when the Leafs take on the Penguins.
