The Toronto Maple Leafs are open to anything and everything this summer.
That was the message delivered by management in the annual post-season media conference. Of note, new MLSE president & CEO Keith Pelley was on hand alongside Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving.
With that being said, we kicked off the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take by commending Sheldon Keefe for the way he went out. The 43-year-old, who put out a goodbye to Leafs Nation video on Thursday, handled his firing with dignity and class. It’s a tough job, and he excelled in the position. At the end of the day, it was time for change. Speaking of which, the Leafs said they want to be thorough with their coaching search. Even though Craig Berube is still considered the front runner for the position, lots of money is starting to come in on Todd McLellan. We discussed.

Present by Greta Bar YYZ, we thoroughly dissected and broke down what Pelley, Shanahan, and Treliving had to say. With regards to Pelley, he really didn’t say much outside of confirming that the team president is going nowhere. Shanahan, meantime, danced around several attempts by the media to get his true thoughts on the Core Four and if it’s time to move on from that philosophy. That said, he did say that the organization will look at everything summer, which is a bit of a shift in direction from previous seasons. If you recall, last year it was Kyle Dubas who was open to doing something drastic. Furthermore, Treliving was very concise and spoke with conviction. Suffice it is to say, it should be a fascinating offseason for the Maple Leafs.
Then, brought to you by Wendy’s, we analyzed some of the candidates for the head coaching position. Most specifically, we wondered if Leafs Nation would be satisfied if making a coaching change was the big move for the offseason. We both agreed that they need to do something substantial with the roster. They need to make a monster trade.
Lastly, for the Great Clips inbox question of the week, we were asked about the press conference and if we were satisfied with what was said. Let’s be honest: They weren’t going to say much. In this type of situation, actions speak louder than words. We’ll see what happens.
That’s it for another week. We’ll be back with you on Monday at 11 AM ET. Talk then!
