According to Sportsnet’s John Shannon, the Leafs are set to sign 2016 second round pick Carl Grundstrom to an entry-level deal.
A native of Umea, Sweden, Grundstrom was selected 57th overall last spring out of the MODO in the Swedish Hockey League. Grundstrom put up 16 points in 49 games in his draft year.
This season, Grundstrom is playing with Frolunda in the SHL. Where he scored 18 points in 44 games.
Grundstrom is considered to be a two-way winger, with net drive and a solid shot.
Here’s what Corey Pronman had to say about the Swede heading into last year’s draft:
Grundstrom has been on the NHL radar for a few years, particularly after several impressive showings last season created buzz around his name. Grudstrom’s skill level has stood out to me, and he showed the ability to make high-end skill plays, but he really excels in playing a two-way forward-type of role…Grundstrom also shows slightly above-average speed, on top of pretty good puck skills. He’ll occasionally make a highlight-reel type of play, but his hands and vision more consistently show as merely above-average.
