REPORT: Maple Leafs assistant Spencer Carbery interviews for Sharks head coaching spot

It wouldn’t be an NHL off-season without some Toronto Maple Leafs news. Instead of news about players, this one is about a member of the team’s coaching staff.

 

According to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach, Spencer Carbery has reportedly interviewed for the San Jose Sharks head coaching job.

 

Carbery, who is a first-year assistant with the Maple Leafs was in reports that he was a name to look out for to become the next head coach of the Boston Bruins. Obviously, that never came to fruition as the Bruins went a different route and ended up hiring Jim Mongomery, but now that Carbery’s name has come up again for a different team means that there is a legitimate chance he could end up leaving Toronto for a head coaching gig instead of an assistant job with Toronto.

Spencer took the 16th-ranked Maple Leafs power-play (20%) from the 2020-21 season and improved them to number one in the entire league this past season (27.3%). His adjustments on the power-play helped this team mightily after they struggled the year prior with Manny Malhotra in charge of that department. Losing a guy like Carbery would sting, especially given what he was able to do to this team in just one single year.

Before making the jump to the NHL coaching level, Carbery spent his time in the AHL between 2016 and 2021 as a head coach of the Saginaw Spirit and Hershey Bears. He won the AHL Coach of the Year award in his final year with the Hershey Bears with a record of 24-7-0-2 and in his three years with the Bears, he coached his team to an unbelievable record of 104-50-9-8 which ultimately earned him the assistant role with the Toronto Maple Leafs the following season.
