This summer will be defined by changes for the Toronto Maple Leafs but one major staple of the team doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.
The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported that that the Maple Leafs haven’t spoken to Tavares’ agent, Pat Brisson about a potential trade. Tavares has been viewed by many as one of the most logical candidates, alongside Mitch Marner, to be traded if the Maple Leafs are looking to make a seismic change to their roster dynamics.
LeBrun also reported that if the Maple Leafs were to ask their captain about a trade, Tavares has no interest in exercising his full no-movement clause, while being slated for unrestricted free agency in 2025.
Tavares recorded 29 goals and 65 points in 80 games last season, while leading the team with 87 shots on the power play. He notched a goal and two assists during Toronto’s seven-game loss to the Boston Bruins this spring. It appears that Tavares is beginning to show some signs of age-related decline but he could still excel on the wing and he could bully bottom-six opponents in select matchups.
This isn’t particularly surprising as Tavares was essentially destined to play for the Maple Leafs, bursting onto the national scene as a teenage prodigy with the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, before being granted exceptional status into the Ontario Hockey League. At this stage of his career, Tavares is valuing comfort, security and he’s the captain of the team unless Auston Matthews eventually graduates into the role. He’s afforded the right to choose where he wants to finish his career.
LeBrun also reported that Mitch Marner’s camp would prefer to the discussions about a possible extension or trade to carry into next season, then reassess where both parties stand. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman stated, with caution on Monday, that Marner’s status may not be resolved until next season.
We’re into speculation season, operating from the counterfactual position until further developments emerge. It does appear clear, for the time being, that John Tavares will be with the Maple Leafs for as long as he desires.
