Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi is signing a four-year extension worth an average annual value of $3.75 million, The Athletic’s Chris Johnston reports.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report on Domi finalizing his extension with the club.
Domi confirmed it on Twitter in true fashion, celebrating with a clip from Martin Scorsese’s modern masterpiece, The Wolf of Wall Street.
Domi, 29, collected nine goals and 47 points to go along with 118 penalty minutes in 80 games with the Maple Leafs during the 2023-24 regular season. The Winnipeg, Manitoba product added one goal and four points in seven games during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Maple Leafs originally signed Domi to a one-year, $3 million contract back on July 2, 2023. He had been slated to become an unrestricted free agent on Monday.
Domi signed with the Maple Leafs at the same time as Tyler Bertuzzi, who also agreed to terms on a one-year contract to join the club for the 2023-24 season. As of 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, the Maple Leafs had not agreed to a new deal with the 29-year-old Bertuzzi for next season and beyond.
Domi was selected No. 13 overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft. Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving served as Coyotes assistant general manager when they picked Domi from the OHL’s London Knights.
Domi made his NHL debut with the Coyotes in 2015 and spent three full seasons in the desert before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk. In his first season in Montreal, Domi set career-highs with 28 goals and 72 points in 82 games.
In the four seasons after that, Domi played for five different teams. After being traded by the Canadiens to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2020, Domi made brief stops with the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, and Dallas Stars before signing with the Maple Leafs, with whom his father, Tie, used to play.
Through 661 career NHL games over parts of nine seasons with the Coyotes, Canadiens, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Stars, and Maple Leafs, Domi has collected 130 goals and 417 points. He’s added seven goals and 26 points in 50 career playoff contests.
