See ya in October

It was the final NHL game in Toronto this year, and the Leafs didn’t disappoint. Well, they sort of did if you’re banking on a top five pick – but the team managed to scrape out an overtime win for the crowd that paid at the gate last night. The season will finally clue up on Saturday in Montreal.

Last night’s overtime winner by Dion Phaneuf gave the Leafs 80 points on the season, which, with all things considered, is a pathetic total. Anaheim now also sits at 80 points, the Islanders with 79, and Montreal, Edmonton, and Columbus will take lottery picks for sure. The draft lottery takes place on Tuesday on TSN, and Saturday will decide if the Leafs will be a part of it.

This final home game was a bit of a snooze. Gardiner managed to grab a goal and an assist to give him 30 points on the season, and Kessel assisted on the winner, ensuring that he will finish this campaign as a point per game player. The Thrill will also finish in the top five in league scoring if he can hold off a few guys at 81 – Neal, Kovalchuk, Tavares.

Scrivens continues to look pretty solid, turning away 35 of 37 for a .946 on the night. It’s another wrench in the Leafs’ goaltending situation going into 2012-13, but would we expect anything different?
