It’s time to take a look at how each individual Leaf did at producing and limiting scoring chances while the team was down a man.  The Leafs saw a modest improvement with their penalty kill in the 2010-11 season.

  – In addition to being the top forwards at Even Strength, Grabovski and Kulemin also led the Leafs in limiting PP chances against.  Mike Brown also performed a mostly admirable job.
 – Brown was used regularly on the PK from the start of the season, but he ran into injury troubles and after a 9 game absence due to shoulder injury (the 2nd time he took an extended absence due to an injury), Brown was kept off the ice during shorthanded situations for 11 consecutive games.  He was placed back into the "rotation" again after Armstrong suffered a broken foot.
 – Dion Phaneuf had the best PPCA/60 average among defencemen who’ve played significant minutes.  Just like last season.  The Leaf captains’ struggles with producing points and his at-times erratic defensive play at even strength have been often talked about, but I think he deserves some credit for his PK work.
– Tim Brent and Fredrik Sjostrom had a rough start to the year, but improved their averages throughout the season.  On the other hand, Tyler Bozak and Colby Armstrong started off very well, but then began to bleed chances against around the last quarter of the season and finished with worse PPCA/60 than Brent and Sjostrom.  See the bottom of this post for a chart that shows Bozak’s struggles towards the end.
 – Goalie save percentages during 4v5 time for each regular penalty killer, courtesy of Behind-the-Net:
FORWARDS – Brown (.790); Sjostrom (.804); Brent (.824); Armstrong (.827); Bozak (.864); Kulemin (.880); Grabovski (.917)
DEFENCEMEN – Gunnarsson (.818); Komisarek (.826); Schenn (.826); Beauchemin (.829); Phaneuf (.854); Aulie (.855)
