Pretty wicked title, right?
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed 21 year old defenceman Viktor Loov to a three year entry level contract. Selected in the 7th round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Loov just wrapped up his first season in the SHL, playing for MODO. In 42 games, Loov scored five goals and added seven assists to go along with 20 penalty minutes. He was fifth in ice time amongst MODO defenders, averaging 16:20 per game.
Last year, Loov signed a two-year contract with MODO, meaning he likely had an NHL out-clause. I mean, it sure sounds like he’s leaving MODO. From the man himself…
That roughly translate to “Thanks for everything, MODO”.
It’s likely that Loov will join the Marlies next season, which will give us a much closer look at his capabilities. That’s going to be a pretty crowded blue line, what with Matt Finn, Eric Knodel, and Tom Nilsson all potentially arriving at Ricoh as well.
Loov is a bit of an unknown, having been drafted in his second year of eligibility, and playing in Sweden’s lower and junirleagues until this season. Lack of exposure led the TLN staff to rank him amongst our ‘honourable mentions’ in our latest Top 20 Leafs Prospects list.
