They stumbled once again in the playoffs this past spring, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are still listed among the betting favourites on the opening 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Maple Leafs fell in seven games to the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, after finishing third in the Atlantic Division standings with a 46-28-8 record during the regular season. Despite that defeat, however, the Maple Leafs are still listed fourth at +1000 (wager $100 to win $1000) on the early odds to win the 2020 Stanley Cup at the sportsbooks.
Toronto has some roster questions heading into the offseason, most notably how much they are going to have to spend to keep restricted free agent Mitch Marner in the fold. Marner led the team with 94 points this past season, and is reportedly looking to sign a contract on par with teammate Auston Matthews – who makes $11.6 million per season on a long-term deal.
Forwards Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen are also set to become restricted free agents in July, while defensmen Jake Gardiner and Ron Hainsey will both be unrestricted free agents this summer. Fellow defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, who makes $4.5 million annually, could be a roster casualty this offseason; Zaitsev had just 14 points in 81 games last season.
The Maple Leafs trail two division rivals on the opening 2020 Stanley Cup betting lines, with the Tampa Bay Lightning the +800 favourites and the Bruins joining the Vegas Golden Knights at +900 on those NHL odds. The defending champion St. Louis Blues sit with the Colorado Avalanche at +1200, with the Washington Capitals just behind the betting favourites at +1600.
The Ottawa Senators are the longshots on the opening Stanley Cup futures at +10000, behind the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings who are both pegged at odds of +6600.
