This week’s Throwback Thursday article features some highs and lows of the Stanley Cup Finals as well as notable draft picks. Let’s take a look back at the week of June 15-21 in NHL history:

June 15, 2011: Unfortunately for CanucksArmy, this week in history isn’t the most fondly remembered. The Canucks were unable to win their first Stanley Cup when they lost to the Bruins 4-0 in Game 7 of the Finals on this day.

June 20, 2002: Jarome Iginla rakes all the trophies in at the 2002 NHL Awards when he wins the Art Ross Trophy (96 points), the Rocket Richard trophy (52 goals) and the Pearson Award (now the Ted Lindsay Award).

June 16, 1990: The Jets were involved in a blockbuster trade when they traded Dale Hawerchuk and a first-round pick (which ended up being Brad May) to the Buffalo Sabres for Phil Housley, Jeff Parker, Scott Arniel and a first-round pick (which ended up being Keith Tkachuk).

June 17, 1989: Leafs legend Mats Sundin is selected first overall by the Quebec Nordiques, where he’d play four season before being traded to the Leafs. He becomes the first European player to be chosen with the No. 1 pick and would finish his career in 2009 with 564 goals and 1,349 points.

June 15, 1985: The Leafs draft fan favourite Wendel Clark first overall in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. Clark would retire from the league 15 years later in 2000 with 330 goals and 564 points.

June 19, 2006:  My apologies in advance for this one. I’ll make it quick. *Rips of bandaid* The Oilers lose to the Hurricanes 3-1 in Game 7 of the Finals. And so begins the Decade of Darkness.

June 17, 2006: If you rewind a bit from the last one, the Oilers beat the Hurricanes 4-0 to push a Game 7, limiting Jussi Markkanen to only facing 16 shots. I know, far less exciting when you already know what’s going to happen in Game 7. Sorry again.

June 17, 1995: Scotty Bowman sets an NHL record when he leads a fourth team (the Red Wings) to the Stanley Cup Finals. He previously led Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Montreal to the Finals.

June 16, 1998:  The Red Wings win their second straight Stanley Cup when they sweep the Capitals in the Finals. It was an emotional night for the Red Wings as tragedy struck the team after the previous year’s Stanley Cup win when a limo carrying team members crashed. Vladimir Konstantinov, who suffered a brain injury and was wheel chair bound following the accident is on the ice to celebrate the win with the team.

June 15, 1993: The Red Wings hire Scotty Bowman as head coach. Bowman has won a record nine Stanley Cup Championships, three of which he won with the Red Wings.
