Who else but Buffalo to grant the Leafs a couple points?
After a fun 5-2 victory on Monday night, the Leafs have now tied their single-season points record at 103. A pair of goals from each of William Nylander and Auston Matthews pushed the Buds towards victory, and well, that’s the way to do it!
That total of the magic 100 and three was last touched in 2003-04, where the Leafs reached the Eastern Conference semi-final before falling to the Flyers in seven games. Matt Stajan remains the only player from that lineup to be still active in the NHL. However, this year’s roster has managed to pick up 48 victories to the pre-lockout team’s 45, which builds on the franchise record set last week.
Other teams to hit the 103-point total in NHL history include: the 2010-11 Tampa Bay Lightning, the 2016-17 Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens, and the 2000-01 St. Louis Blues.
While 103 points is nothing to sniff at, it’s only the first step up the ladder for the Leafs. With two games left in the season, it’ll take just a single point over the next few games for this to officially be the most successful Leafs regular season of all time.
