Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 2003 (Sept. 9), the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Joe Nieuwendyk to a one-year contract.
At 37 years old, he stepped into the Leafs lineup and kept up his high scoring ways without much fail. In 64 games, he scored 22 goals and 50 points and another six goals in nine playoff games.
His season, however, was marred with abdominal and back injuries in the regular season and a groin injury that forced him out of the playoffs in the second round.
He had originally signed another one-year deal for the 2004-05 season, but the season had been cancelled due to the lockout.
All in all, it was a homecoming — albeit a short one — for the native of Oshawa, Ontario and on top of that, his deal had been inked one day before his birthday. Not a bad gift for the future hall of farmer.
