TLN Player Power Rankings: Future Leafs Edition

Jon Steitzer
It’s a long way to go before the Leafs are playing hockey
again, and that means the occasional Player Power Rankings may have to go off
the beaten path, and look at players who aren’t Leafs (yet.) This week I’m
looking to the HFBoards to help me out, and here are the Power Rankings of
players acquired by the HFBoards for the Leafs.

1. LAWSON CROUSE

Which team with a top 10
pick would be willing to give it up, at the draft, with Crouse still on
board…straight up for JVR. Somewhere in the 6-10 range, which teams would do
it? Would Toronto fans approve of this deal, but strictly to draft Crouse, not
insert your fave here? We need this guy imho, but just not at 4… (source)
I am very much in the
camp that supports the idea of trading van Riemsdyk, and fully admit to having
suggested this straight up idea for the 6th overall pick before as
well. Of course when I’ve done it I’ve seen the Leafs chasing Barzal, Provorov,
and hoping that Strome or Marner inexplicably slide because Ron Francis has a
good feeling about a goalie that he doesn’t want to risk losing. I’ve said it
before, I think Crouse is a decent hockey player, but picking him here and
giving up JVR for him would make me nauseous.

2. NIK GROSSMAN

To Leafs
Nicklas
Grossmann
5th round
pick 2016
To
Flyers

James
Reimer
Tony
Cameranesi
I want to
try to make a good Leafs proposal. The second half may seem a little
unconventional, but a simple yes or no would suffice here. I don’t think I’m
totally off, but who knows on here sometimes right?(source)
Step 1 of making a good
Leafs proposal: Do not acquire Nik Grossman.
Step 2 of making a good Leafs proposal: If you must acquire Nik Grossman,
recognize he’s a salary dump, not an asset, so you do not give up a decent
goaltender, and a long shot prospect to acquire a different long shot prospect.

3. JUSTIN SCHULTZ

Schultz + PIT 1st + MTL
2nd
for
Phaneuf
w/ 1M retention (source)
A first and a second for
Phaneuf isn’t a bad haul. Retaining $1M is an affordable penalty. Getting
Phaneuf to accept a deal to Edmonton is probably the biggest challenge.
As far as Schultz goes,
he’s the best option of all of the Edmonton salary dump options. He’s young. He’s
the former defensive partner of Jake Gardiner. And you have the flexibility of
choosing not to re-sign him at all and let him walk as an unrestricted free
agent if you feel he’s garbage. Of course if you keep him, his qualifying offer
dictates that you overpay him, but what’s one year of an expensive blueliner
when you’re already paying Stephane Robidas?

4. MIKE RICHARDS

To Toronto
2015 1st
Kempe
Zykov
Richards
To Los
Angeles
Kessel
This
seems like a fair base, what do you guys think (source)
So there’s a lot more to
this deal than Mike Richards, which is good since Kessel is going the other
way. Breaking it down it’s probably Zkyov in exchange for taking Richards, and
Kempe and a 1st for Kessel. This seems embarrassing low value for
Phil. On the plus side, the Kings are probably one of the few teams that Kessel
has that he will accept a trade to, so that’s a plus. Kessel vs. Darryl Sutter
seems like a treat for everyone.
Back to Mike Richards, I
object solely because I want the Kings to stew in their own failed salary
situation. No one should help them by trading for Richards, Quick, or Brown.

5. RYAN MURRAY

To Leafs
Ryan Murray
2015 2nd rounder (Leafs)

To Columbus
JVR
Stu Percy

How it shapes up for Toronto:
Leafs 1st: Lawson Crouse
Preds 1st: Anthony Beauvillier
Columbus 2nd: Vince Dunn/Jonas Seiganthaler
Toronto rebuilds on the fly. Drafts two high ceiling forwards and acquires a
top 4 D-man in Ryan Murray and drafts one in Dunn and Seiganthaler.
How is shapes up for Columbus:
Columbus 1st: Ivan Provorov
Columbus gets an NHL ready D-man who most likely will be a lot more durable
than Murray. They also get a young, big top line forward for their top 6 signed
to a very cap friendly long term deal.
At this point it should be painfully clear that the HFBoards
really seems to love Lawson Crouse. This should be expected since they love
Zack Kassian, Tom Wilson, and Milan Lucic is their patron saint. Looking past
the fact that none of the jackasses should never be allowed near the draft
floor, the idea of acquiring someone like Murray for JVR is really appealing. Also
I think the HFBoards wants to trade JVR even more than I do, which should make
me want to reevaluate my decisions in life.

6. STEVEN STAMKOS

Yzerman has already seen
what a disaster it can potentially be by handing out a franchise crippling
contact. The question is, does he give one to Stamkos anyways, or go a
different route?
Under the
assumption that Stamkos indicates he wants to sign with Toronto once the deal
is made.
To
Toronto
Stamkos
To
Tampa Bay
JVR
Futures/Picks
Toronto
gets their franchise center. Lightning avoid misfiring on a potentially
crippling contract. Picks and futures would be significant enough to make up
for the difference in value. (source)
That’s bullet proof
logic. How could I argue? I just hope the Leafs don’t give up the pick they’ll
use to select Lawson Crouse.

7. RILEY BARBER

Bozak
For
Barber
4th 2015
(source)
This trade addresses one
of the most important things the Leafs can do, and that’s rid themselves of
Bozak. Now I’m not in the camp that’s under the impression that Barber is an
amazing asset, but he’s a bit of prospect depth, the Leafs get a fourth, and
have over four million dollars of cap space as a result. This deal is pretty
good by HFBoards standards.

8. JOHNNY BOYCHUK

To nyi: Nylander
To tor:
Boychuk
Leafs get
top pairing D they need. NYI gets a solid prospect who is redundant in Toronto
with kessel, kadri and likely marner (source)
This trade proposal
literally makes me feel that there is no hope for humanity. I just want to lock
myself in a dark room and wait for the end.

9. ANTHONY MANTHA

Nylander for Mantha
With the
leafs likely to draft Marner given how much Hunter is crushing on him, the
Leafs create need to get bigger. (source)
Okay. Can we just all
agree that trading Nylander is literally the worst thing this organization can
do? I get that Mantha is very tall and that’s exciting for a lot of people, but
we seem to overlooking THAT NYLANDER IS INFINITELY MORE TALENTED. Nylander,
Rielly, and 4th overall pick. You don’t move these pieces, but feel
free to talk about literally anyone else. You’ll seem like less of an idiot.

10. LUCA SBISA

Ok so
Gardiner
Ross
Sbisa
Shincaruk
(source)
I hate the internet.
First off, the other piece from Vancouver is Hunter Shinkaruk, but that doesn’t
matter. He’s in no way good enough that you should be talking about trading
Gardiner for him, let alone having to take on the sadness that is Luca Sbisa
hockey. Thankfully Sbisa just got a big shiny new contract from the Canucks so
they are committing to him long term and that should bring joy to everyone
outside of Vancouver.
