The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 tonight, extending their winning streak to five games.
@Auston Matthews, TJ Brodie and @Zach Hyman scored for the Leafs, while @Corey Perry scored both goals for the Habs. @Jack Campbell improves to 10-0-0 on the season and extended his season-long win streak to 10 games, setting a new record for the Leafs.
The Leafs came out of the gate quickly to start the game. Matthews scored off a fade-away wrap-around just 54 seconds in to give the Leafs the early lead. The goal was Matthews’ 28th of the season, giving him a five-goal lead over second place @Connor McDavid. Corey Perry responded just under 2 minutes later to even the game up at 1-1.
The second period was scoreless, but the Habs tilted the ice in their favour, heavily outshooting and out-chancing the Leafs, but Campbell held down the fort.
In the third period, the Leafs broke the dam open again, courtesy of TJ Brodie’s first goal as a Leaf and Zach Hyman cashing in off a Matthews rebound. The Habs pushed late in the third, with Perry scoring his second goal of the game with @Jake Allen pulled. The Leafs however, held on in this one for the victory, improving to 27-10-3 on the season.
Third Star: TJ Brodie
Finally. After 40 games, Brodie finally scored his first goal as a Leaf. While he definitely wasn’t brought in to score goals, it’s nice to see Brodie finally get on the board.
TJ Brodie has been worth every penny this season. He’s not flashy or anything, but he’s calm, cool and collected out there. He makes the hard plays look simple and he is also so damn good defensively.
Second Star: Auston Matthews
What’s impressive with Matthews is how he doesn’t just rely on one or two ways to score goals. This guy can score goals in every single way imaginable. He had some lulls in his game tonight, but he did record the all important opening goal and set-up the eventual game winner by Hyman. Don’t look now, but Matthews has started to increase the gap from second place for the Rocket Richard trophy.
First Star: Jack Campbell
Hard to not pick the guy that has a 10-0-0 record this season as first star. Campbell has been an absolute rock-star for the Leafs this season, stabilizing a very weak area for the Leafs. The Leafs could have easily unraveled in the second period when the Habs took over the game. Instead, Campbell did his best impersonation of a brick wall, stopping everything the Habs threw at him in the second period.
Campbell is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs.
Tweet of the Night
I say they do it.
The Leafs have a rare two days off before getting the Battle of Ontario going once again on Saturday night. Puck drop between the Leafs and Senators is at 7:00pm EST on Sportsnet.
