It looks like Mark Hunter got his guy.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have drafted London Knights forward Mitchell Marner with the 4th pick of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. I imagine he’s pretty happy about it.
While there was certainly a lot of talk about the Leafs looking at other players this year, namingly Boston College’s Noah Hanifin, Brandon’s Ivan Provorov and Seattle’s Mathew Barzal, Toronto ultimately went with the player they were most familiar with. Hunter was the GM in London that drafted Marner in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft.
Undersized at 5’10 and 161lbs, Marner uses elite offensive skill and speed to avoid defenders and get into prime scoring positions. In 63 games this season, Marner scored a very impressive 44 goals and 126 points for the Knights.
As expected, Erie’s Connor McDavid Otters was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers, followed by Boston University’s Jack Eichel by the Buffalo Sabres. With the third pick, the Arizona Coyotes snapped up Erie’s Dylan Strome.
