The 2021 NWHL draft will be a bountiful experience for the Toronto Six, taking literally half of the first round and still having 5 picks in the remaining 4 rounds. Below we’ll profile the three first round selections for Toronto to give you an idea on what talent they’re adding to their roster which was able to make the Isobel Cup final in their first NWHL season.

The Six’s first selection in the draft was a British Columbian Boston College (BC^2) product. The third overall draft selection was announced by Boston College coach Katie Crowley (and her daughter who celebrated the selection with an amazing cannonball… seriously!).

Beres, a forward, played all four college season with Boston College, and served as their captain in her Senior season in 2020-21.

She led her Eagles to the Hockey East championship tournament, finishing second in that conference, but unfortunately lost in the first round.

Beres is a winger who plays a more defensive role for her team. She only had 2 points, a goal and an assist, in her final 19-game season, and only 7 goals in her previous 3 seasons of over 100 NCAA games.

After her selection, Beres had this to say about her path forward with the Toronto Six:

Their second pick in this draft and the fourth overall pick was announced by the General Manager of the Florida Marlins, Kim Ng.

Skaggs is also a forward who played for Ohio State University, and had announced a signing with the Austrian EHV Savres Wien in the European Women’s Hockey League, so it will be interesting to see if she will be able to still sign with the Toronto Six instead, or play for both somehow.

She was an elite scorer with the OSU program in the WCHA conference, scoring 19 points in 20 games in her Senior year, and 42 in 38 in her Junior year. Skaggs is also a winger, but clearly more of an offensively dynamic presence than Beres. She notably averaged almost 4 shots on goal per game this season.

The third pick for Toronto was announced by their recently added assistant coach, women’s hockey legend Angela James.

The first defender selected by Toronto comes from York University right here in Canada. However, defense isn’t the only thing on Davison’s mind when she plays. She’s an offensive threat as well, scoring 20 points in 24 games this season (with 4 more in 5 playoff games).

Davison comes from Oakville, so the opportunity to play for the Toronto Six will surely exciting for her. She joins a dynamic defense core that she’ll fit in with very nicely.

The 23-year-old is an older draft-eligible player who started her 4 year university career at 19.

This is a great set of new talent for Toronto’s Season 7 team, under the assumption that each of them will be able to join the team. Surely newly-named General Manager Krystiana Clarke will have a plan to incorporate this new talent into the roster.
