Toronto’s NWHL franchise added a prominent player today in signing former Syracuse Orange captain Linsday Eastwood:
As noted in the tweet from the team’s Twitter account, College Hockey America (a D-1 NCAA division for women’s hockey only) named Eastwood the nation’s top defender in the division. A native of Kanata, ON, the college senior racked up 28 points in 36 games from the blueline in her second season as the Orange’s captain. This production earned her 16th in the NCAA D-1, and led her somewhat mediocre team in scoring (tied with sophomore forward Abby Moloughney). Last year, Eastwood took Syracuse to its first CHA Tournament title in the program’s history.
All quotes below are taken from the team’s article on its website.
“Lindsay leaves Syracuse as one of its all-time most accomplished players,” said Syracuse head coach Paul Flanagan. She is an exceptional leader who made her presence known at both ends of the ice. She not only was one of the CHA’s best defenders, but a prolific scorer from the blue line. We wish Lindsay and the Toronto Six all the best this season.”
Fun fact: Lindsay joins her uncle, Mike Eastwood in building their professional hockey careers in Toronto. Mike was drafted by the Maple Leafs in 1987, 91st overall, and was with the team (and its AHL affiliate St. John’s Maple Leafs) for 4 seasons.
Eastwood helps to fill out a Toronto defense that is still forming, as she joins two new teammates on D in Kristen Barbara and Emma Greco, who the team signed just after it announced its formation.
“Lindsay will be an impact player for the Six right away,” said Toronto GM Mandy Cronin. “She’s a proven leader with great size and a strong shot from the point. We can’t wait to see her in a Toronto Six jersey this season.” And neither can I!
From the Daily Orange article on this signing:
“The two-time Orange captain almost had her career ended by a rare autoimmune disease before her freshman year, but came back to eventually lead Syracuse to its first ever College Hockey America championship in 2019.
A two-way defender, Eastwood earned minutes on the Orange’s first defensive pairing, and the power play and penalty kill unite. She recorded her first career hat trick in the 2019 CHA tournament semifinals against over Mercyhurst, a win that propelled the Orange to the finals and eventually their first NCAA tournament appearance.”
