The Leafs announced their training camp roster today and there was a notable, yet predictable, player missing. William Nylander, as of right now, won’t be attending Leafs camp.
This is because he doesn’t have a contract. If you don’t have a contract, you can’t attend camp. There’s nothing new here, so there’s no reason to panic.
Here’s the list.
It’s 40 forwards, 25 defenders, and eight goalies.
Every single player the Leafs had a rookie camp was invited to the main camp. So new Large Adult Sons like Semyon Der-Arguchintsev and Rasmus Sandin will be there. Will they make the team? Of course not, but it’ll be nice for them to be there regardless.
There are also a bunch of AHL types there too. Like, Rich Clune is at camp. Does that mean he’s competing for a spot on the Leafs? Of course not. It’s normal for players like these to come to the main camp to flesh out the roster and fill up the ice for practices and scrimmages. Also, it isn’t the worst idea to have a dude like Rich Clune on a pre-season roster when there might be a bunch of goons running around trying to make a name for themselves.
Training camp will be held at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls. All practices and events will be held there and it’s free to get in. There’s also a free Leafs Alumni game happening on Saturday night featuring players like Wendel Clark, Darcy Tucker, and Nik Antropov. The pre-season starts on Tuesday, Sept. 18 against the Ottawa Senators for the Lucan Kraft Hockeyville Game.
Fuck yeah, hockey.
