WWYDW: Trade for a pending UFA

There’s one year left on a fair amount of deals around the league, as teams are more and more fearing that Pajama Boy John Tavares has set the wheels in motion for a free agency unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Many of these players are on bad teams, and realize they could be on good teams.

Assuming anyone’s on the table (and you don’t get the guarantee of any additional years, who would you trade for?

Are you shooting the moon (and a rival’s dreams down), and making a play for Erik Karlsson? Do you create the best centre depth of all time and make a move for Tyler Seguin? Is high-end winger Artemi Panarin on your radar? What about reuniting one-year teammates (and world junior legends) Tavares and Jordan Eberle?

Do you rid Buffalo of Jeff Skinner so quickly after they’ve traded for him?

Or do you keep it simple and trade for someone like Jason Spezza, knowing their cost of acquisition would be much lower while allowing Dallas to eat some of the salary?

What about goalies? Do you make an Andersen-for-Bobrovsky play?

Also, would you make the move now, midseason, or right at the deadline?
