On Wednesday, Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin published the latest edition of his NHL trade board. And with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ new front office settling in, Larkin listed a number of the team’s players to watch for on the market.
As usual, Larkin’s board is separated into tiers. This week, no Maple Leafs appeared in the first tier of “Obvious trade candidates,” but four players appeared under the second tier of “Names to keep an eye on.” This included goaltender Anthony Stolarz, with Larkin writing:
The Leafs have a logjam forming in net between Stolarz, Woll and the emerging Dennis Hildeby, with Artur Akhtyamov also showing promise in the AHL during the team’s run to the Calder Cup Final. If you have to move one netminder from the stable: Stolarz is the oldest, the most expensive, has the worst injury history and played the poorest of the group this season. Could that make him the odd man out? On the flip side, all those traits might give him the lowest trade value among Toronto’s tenders.
Of note, the 32-year-old goaltender has a cap hit of $3.75 million through the 2029-30 season, and has a 16-team no-trade list.
Another name under Tier 2 was Morgan Rielly. The veteran defender has long been rumoured to be on the block for the Leafs, and nothing has changed under new management.
The Leafs and new GM John Chayka find themselves in quite the quagmire with Rielly. He’s no longer the puck-moving defenseman they need him to be. He’s not a $7.5-million player despite his scoring contributions and leadership. The team would likely be better off moving on from him – but he controls whether he goes at all via his NMC, and his trade value isn’t particularly high given the performance doesn’t match the price tag. The savings would be significant on a buyout, but eight years paying him would be tough to stomach.
Defenceman Brandon Carlo and forward Matthew Knies rounded out the names for the Leafs in Tier 2. Carlo has struggled since joining the Leafs, both on the ice and with injury, meaning his market value may be low. With regards to Knies, Larkin notes he’s only listed due to reports that he was nearly dealt at the trade deadline by former GM Brad Treliving.
The one other Leaf to make this week’s board is team captain Auston Matthews, listed under the third tier of “Big stars, big swings.” Larkin notes that signs are positive Matthews will stay in Toronto, but cites the example of Quinn Hughes as a situation with a star changing fast.
