Welcome back to another edition of Around the NHL. There’s been plenty of surprises early on in the new season, as Macklin Celebrini and Connor Bedard have recently been putting on a show.
Celebrini and Bedard are both top-five in NHL scoring, along with Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson, who has burst on the scene this season, sitting in second place in league scoring behind Colorado Avalanche veteran Nathan MacKinnon. As far as teams goes, there’s been plenty turning heads, including the Montreal Canadiens, who lead the Atlantic Division with a 10-3-2 record. On the other end of the spectrum, the Calgary Flames are struggling bad this season to score goals and it’s costing them, as they were shutout against the Minnesota Wild Sunday night, and enter the new week with a 4-11-2 record, the worst in the NHL.
Here’s all the very latest from around the NHL:
St. Louis Blues open for business on trade market
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has been doing a bunch of travelling recently as he’s evaluating potential players for Team Canada’s Olympic team, but what it’s also given Armstrong a chance to do, is chat with other GM’s from around the league about players available on the Blues. According to multiple reports, including from hockey insider Frank Seravalli, the Blues are open for business.
Head coach Jim Montgomery recently healthy scratched Jordan Kyrou, which turned some heads around the league. Kyrou is signed through the 2030-31 season at $8.12 million AAV, and after sitting out one game, scored in his return. The speedy winger has registered five goals and nine points in 15 games this season, and is coming off a 36-goal, 70-point season. Kyrou’s been in the middle of trade talks before, and was rumored to be almost dealt to the Seattle Kraken at the last NHL Draft.
Kyrou’s not the only Blue who could be moved. Keep an eye on Brayden Schenn, Pavel Buchnevich, Justin Faulk, and Jordan Binnington, who have all been linked to recent trade talks. Schenn was almost moved ahead of last season’s trade deadline, and with the potential of a full-on culture change in St. Louis, he’s very likely to be shipped out of town in what many feel would be a ‘hockey trade’ and not one where Armstrong just sells off his players for future draft picks and middle-of-the-road prospects.
Binnington seems like someone who could be moved to the Edmonton Oilers, but those two teams aren’t necessarily best of friends considering what went down with Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg’s contracts. There’s a few other teams who are likely eyeing Binnington as well, as the former Stanley Cup and 4 Nations Faceoff champion is going to be one of the better goaltenders available this season. The Blues are 5-8-3 and don’t appear to be a playoff team this season, so Joel Hofer is likely going to take over as the team’s number-one goaltender, with Armstrong being able to shop Binnington, who has one more year on his deal at $6 million AAV, and owns a 14-team no-trade clause. If it isn’t the Oilers, keep an eye on the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers.
Keep an eye on the Nashville Predators
Speaking of messes, the Nashville Predators have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately. Ryan O’Reilly called himself out recently after another disappointing game, and frankly, threw himself under the bus in one of the rarest rants you’ll ever see.
O’Reilly has recorded 12 points in 17 games this season, with the Predators entering the new week with a 5-8-4 record, struggling once again to score goals. GM Barry Trotz may have no alternative but to make some drastic changes in Nashville, and there’s going to be a ton of contending teams circling their waters on their veterans.
O’Reilly is certainly a centre that the Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, and Colorado Avalanche could have interest in. Along with ‘The Factor’, there’s also Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, who both signed as free agents in Nashville, and it’s unfortunately, for those involved, not working out very well. Stamkos just scored his third goal in 17 games this year, meanwhile, Marchessault has recorded six points in 14 games. Michael Bunting is a pending free agent and could be moved, you can also add versatile forward Erik Haula to the group of potential trade candidates.
Changes are a brewing in Nashville, as the Predators are once again failing to meet expectations, and Trotz won’t be able to sit on his hands much longer.
Quick hits from around the NHL:
- Washington Capitals forward Pierre-Luc Dubois is expected to miss up to fourth months with an abductor injury.
- Despite the struggles, Flames ownership aren’t in a rush to trade Nazem Kadri, as they don’t want to ‘throw in the towel’ with their fan base.
- The crop of rookies this season are very strong, with Matthew Schaefer and Ivan Demidov leading the way. The Canadiens’ rookie has posted 13 points this season, good for two ahead of the Islanders’ defenceman.
- Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin has taken a leave of absence from the team to be at home with his wife, who underwent a heart transplant over the summer.
- The 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame class of inductees were honoured ahead of the Maple Leafs-Hurricanes game on Sunday night, but it was worth nothing that inductee, and former Maple Leafs Alex Mogilny did not attend.
- David Pagnotta sees the surging Anaheim Ducks making a big trade for an impact forward at some point this season. Led by Carlsson, the Ducks are 11-3-1 to start the year.
