The NHL’s preseason schedule is off and running as summer is officially over.
Teams are starting to get a feel for who is standing out at training camp and coaches are getting a sense of what their lineup may look like to kick off the regular season. With the regular season just over two weeks away, it feels great to say ‘hockey is back’.
It was a busy week in the hockey world. Here’s the latest from around the NHL:

Red Wings sign Moritz Seider to $59.8-million extension

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been very busy to close out his offseason as Detroit re-signed restricted free-agent defenceman Moritz Seider to a seven-year, $59.8 million extension.
Seider’s deal is worth $8.07 million annually and once again Yzerman signed a major piece of his franchise for less than captain Dylan Larkin, who earns $8.7 million per season. It’s very much the same type of structure Yzerman was used to when he played for the organization and everyone was making less than star defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom.
Seider is a workhorse on the Wings’ blueline and continues to develop on both sides of the puck. The 23-year-old was originally selected No. 6 overall in 2019 and has yet to miss a game. Seider has appeared in 246 games, scored 21 goals and has collected 134 points. He plays heavy minutes in Motown and if the team is able to get over the hump and back into the playoffs, Seider will have his fingerprints all over it.
The Maple Leafs face off against the Red Wings on Oct.3 and Oct.5 in preseason action. Their first regular season matchup is scheduled for Nov.8.

Rangers’ captain feels this could be last run for team’s core

After a very interesting offseason in New York, Rangers’ captain Jacob Trouba recently made some very interesting comments about the team’s core. Trouba feels this could be the team’s last crack at winning a Stanley Cup and anything less could lead to some significant changes.
“(It’s) an opportunity that we have in front of us that in all likelihood will probably be the last crack for this core,” Trouba said per The Associated Press. “I don’t think that’s a secret by any means. (A) group that’s kind of grown together, spent some years together here, and there’s something we want to accomplish.”
Trouba joined the Rangers in 2019 and has been their captain for the past two seasons. He dealt with some serious noise this summer as trade rumours ran rampant and from the sounds of it, it hasn’t put a damper on his relationship with the organization.
“There’s a lot of things that were said and snowballed,” Trouba said, per The New York Post’s Mollie Walker. “I don’t know, you’re going to have figure out where they came from. If you find out, let me know.”
The Rangers have made the Eastern Conference Final two of the last three years and are once again a team that will contend in the East. If things go south, look for GM Chris Drury to re-tool on the fly and Trouba could be dead smack in the middle of it all.

Macklin Celebrini scores in preseason debut

2024 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini made his NHL preseason debut for the San Jose Sharks on Sunday and scored in his opening act.
Celebrini and the Sharks lost 4-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights but it was a big night for the 18-year-old, who potted his first goal and also added an assist. Celebrini made it 3-1 at the 6:33 of the third period with a one-timer from the right circle on the power play.
While the Sharks aren’t expected to compete for a playoff spot this season, the expectations are sky high for what Celebrini will be able to accomplish in his rookie year. Look for him and teammate Will Smith to be among the best rookies in the NHL this season. The future is very bright in San Jose.

Evander Kane out for several months

After an offseason of trying to find answers and the best way to attack multiple surgeries, Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane underwent successful sports hernia surgery last week.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Kane could be out until January or February. The Oilers’ winger has mentioned to the media recently that not only was he having work done on his sports hernia, he also needed surgery to fix his hip and abdominal injuries.
Kane appeared in 77 games last season, recording 24 goals and 20 assists. He added eight points in 20 playoff games and is set to earn $5.12 million against the cap this season.
The Oilers open their 2024-25 campaign on Oct.9 against the Winnipeg Jets and will meet up with the Maple Leafs on Nov.16 when they visit Toronto.

Training Camp Quick Hits:

  • Kevin Lankinen signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks as there’s still some question marks surrounding the health of both Thatcher Demko and Arturs Silovs
  • Los Angeles Kings forward Arthur Kaliyev is fresh off signing a one-year contract to stay in LA. but he was injured on day two of camp and is now out indefinitely after fracturing his clavicle. After a ton of trade speculation, Kaliyev was hopeful this season would be a fresh start with the Kings.
  • Winnipeg Jets defenceman Ville Heinola has an ankle infection and will be out indefinitely. The 2019 first-rounder was in the running to break camp with the Jets but will have to battle his way up the depth chart once he’s activated.
  • Utah HC made some noise recently as it re-signed winger Dylan Guenther to an eight-year extension worth $7.14 million AAV. Guenther, 21, has only 78 games of NHL experience and is coming off a 50-point season. Guenther was drafted ninth overall in 2021.
  • New Jersey Devils and restricted free-agent forward Dawson Mercer came to terms on a three-year extension worth $4 million annually. Mercer appeared in all 82 games for the third start year and is coming off a 20-goal season.
  • The Ottawa Senators have made some major developments on a major development. The Senators-led Capital Sports Development Inc. reached an agreement in principle with National Capital Commission regarding the sale of land to bring an arena district and major events center to LeBreton Flats. The franchise has been seeking an arena in Ottawa’s downtown core for over a decade.
